James Hughes, Editor
James Hughes is a Professor of Comparative Politics at the London School of Economics (LSE). He has written extensively on transition issues in Eastern Europe and the CIS region, including European enlargement, Russian Federalism, interethnic relations and national and ethnic conflict. He is the author of more than 40 academic books, articles, and chapters. His most recent book is Chechnya: From Nationalism to Jihad, published by University of Pennsylvania Press in 2007. Dr. Hughes is a graduate of Queen’s University Belfast and received his Ph.D. from LSE.
Ben Slay, Executive Editor
Ben Slay is a senior economist for UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS, supporting regional and global initiatives, and advising UNDP senior management and country offices. In addition to his role at Development and Transition, Dr. Slay is editor of Problems of Economic Transition. Dr. Slay received his Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics at Indiana University (Bloomington), and has taught at a number of American universities and colleges.
Gwendolyn Sasse, Deputy Editor
Gwendolyn Sasse is Professorial Fellow, Nuffield College, Oxford University. Before coming to Oxford she was Senior Lecturer in Comparative European Politics in the European Institute and the Department of Government at the London School of Economics. Her research interests include post-communist transitions, ethnic conflict, minority rights, migration, EU enlargement, the European Neighbourhood Policy, and Ukrainian politics. Her latest book is The Crimea Question: Identity, Transition, Conflict (Harvard University Press, 2007). Dr. Sasse holds a PhD in Political Science from the London School of Economics.
Peter Serenyi, Managing Editor
Peter Serenyi is Editor and Regional Publications Manager at UNDP’s Bratislava Regional Centre. Before joining UNDP, he earned a Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University. Prior to graduate school, he worked for almost 10 years as a journalist in Moscow, Budapest, and London. His work appeared in The Economist, Euromoney, the International Herald Tribune, and other publications.
Dasa Rehakova, Production and Marketing Coordinator
Dasa Rehakova is Communications Associate for UNDP’s Bratislava Regional Centre. Previously, she was Project Associate at the Centre, supporting Cyprus-based projects and working for the Country Support Team. Before joining UNDP she had worked for the Slovak town of Piestany as City Strategist, Project Manager, and PR and Promotions Officer in City Hall. She holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Economics in Bratislava, with specializations in Business Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Tourism.
